Born in Buffalo, New York, Howard Schleeter briefly attended the Albright Art School before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Arriving in New Mexico in 1929, Schleeter first worked as an artist in the Federal Arts Project of 1936 – 1942. He soon began to experiment with media, exploring and inventing new painting techniques. A prolific painter who also taught and lectured, Schleeter lived to see his work exhibited at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
